Our Windows
“For me a stained-glass window is a transparent partition between my heart
and the heart of the world.”
— Marc Chagall
Nick Finnigan, a Murwillumbah resident and artist, handcrafted our beautiful stained-glass windows.
Nick lovingly crafted each window and oversaw their installation in the then-restored chapel over a two-year period. The faces of the saints and martyrs depicted in the windows were all hand painted onto the glass.
Every window depicts people who lived lives of great virtue. The red rose-topped windows depict people who were martyred for their faith and convictions. The white rose-topped windows depict people who lived lives of great virtue and are an inspiration to us today. Our largest stained-glass window, called the Creation Window, depicts Australian native fauna and flora and is topped with angels whose faces represent those who donated or made significant contributions to the chapel's construction. Below the angels, the Holy Spirit is represented by a regent bower bird and the center is completed by Madonna and Child, modeled off Chartres' great Marian window.
In addition, we have one green window that shows the direction of Mecca. We are a Catholic community, but people of all faiths are welcome to pray with us.
